Food, glorious food!

Food, glorious food!

Food, glorious food! Like me, you probably really enjoy and appreciate food. I love the textures, tastes, aromas and flavour combinations that come from many different cuisines around the world.

Many of us, however, have problems with food these days because we don’t eat for enjoyment, but rather to satisfy some emotion that we might be experiencing.

Food is necessary to sustain life, not to restrain emotions. Trying to control emotions with food doesn’t work as the emotion will always return once the food is gone, which simply leads to overeating!

We also need to realise that all of our food comes from other species that are atomically completely different to us. Our digestive system is so amazing that it can convert that garden salad into say, the membrane in your eye, or that beautiful beef steak into your bicep muscle.

Now I realise why many cultures around the world give thanks for their food before they eat it: because they realise that one species has given up its existence so that it may be converted into us.

Yes, food is glorious for sure, but we would do well to remember where that food has come from before we use it purely as a means to make us feel better, which only leads to consuming too much of it.

What a waste it is that another species should make the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to have food just to satisfy our emotions.
