How past experience affects your perception today

How past experience affects your perception today

When you look up into the night sky what do you see?

When you smell a beautiful rose what do you smell?

When you taste your favourite food what do you taste?

I’ll answer for you if you like – your past. When you look at the night sky, you only see the stars because you’ve been told to see them. What about all the space between each star. If there was no space there would be no stars would there?

What about that rose? Well, I reckon you are smelling that present rose through the experience of past smelly roses, so I reckon because I’m a smart-arse that you are mainly smelling the memory of past roses.

Likewise your food. If you really pay attention carefully you’ll notice that you taste that chocolate before the present one even enters your mouth, so you must be tasting the memory of a past one, correct?

Your life is filtered by your past constantly, every second of every day, but when it’s not, you have an astounding experience. Well, actually you don’t, you just experience whatever it is unfiltered, that’s all.

Now look, don’t get me wrong here, you’re going ok, you get by right? You make a living, you have friends right? Yeah, thought so, so you’re doing ok. But ok is not astounding. I’d rather be astounded, wouldn’t you?
